About Georgia College & State University

Georgia College & State University, or GCSU for short, is a public university in Milledgeville, which is the county seat of Baldwin County, situated in the US state of Georgia, having a population estimated at a number of more than 18 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Milledgeville was the capital of Georgia, between 1806 and 1868, but is was succeeded by Atlanta, which is the current capital. It is the principal city of the Milledgeville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which covers Baldwin and Hancock counties, and which in 2000, had more than 54 000 people, living within its limits.

GCSU was established in 1889, first starting as a women's college, under the name of Georgia Normal & Industrial College, which was a sister institution to the Georgia School of Technology, later becoming Georgia State College for Women and then Georgia College, its current name being adopted in 1996, ''State University'' being added to its name as part of the mission change given to it by the Board of Regents.

GCSU ''is committed to combining the educational experiences typical of esteemed private liberal arts colleges with the affordability of public higher education'', and it emphasizes undergraduate education and select graduate programs. The university has a total enrollment estimated at a number of more than 6000 students, most of which are undergraduates, to whom it offers academic programs which are focused on student development and outcomes, including strong communication skills, both oral and written, civic responsibility and broad understanding of global issues.

Athletics

The athletic teams from Georgia College & State University are known as the Bobcats, who compete in all the traditional college sports, for men and women, in NCAA Division II. Their distinctive colors are navy blue and hunter green.
